Cross country teams qualify for state

The Varsity cross country teams are coming to the finish line of a great season. The girls' team finished second in the region and the boys finished third at the Region 6-AA meet at Berry College on Oct. 25. Both the boys and girls varsity teams have already qualified for the state competition by meeting the state-sanctioned time standards. The girls' team achieved this at the Berry meet, while the boys' team did this at the Westover Invitational in Albany. The top seven runners will compete as a full varsity team at the state meet on Saturday, Nov. 3, in Carrollton.
“Our girls' varsity team has won the state championship five years in a row, and we hope to be contending for that honor again,” Ken Wempe, cross country assistant coach, said. “The competition is fierce and we focus on upcoming competitions and personal achievements.”
Seniors Rachel Sargent, Joyce Sweeney; juniors Kirby Cross, Collins Davidson, Courtney Williams; freshmen Sarah Fox, and Kristi Buice will make up the girls’ team. Alternates are seniors Minaka Makita, Katie Lyall, and sophomore Lydie White.
For the boys’ team, juniors Patrick King, Andrew Lawrence, Paul Kountz; sophpomores Max Hinton, Brightman Thomas, Benji White; and freshman Bradley Pierson will run with alternates senior Jordano Williams; juniors Nathan Sumner and Mark Mooring. “The boys' team is young with no seniors on the top seven, and hungry for success,” Wempe said. “We hope to place as high as we can at the state meet and build upon that base next year.”
