Cross country takes lead

Darlington celebrates the cross country team’s 40th anniversary. Since 1971, the team has won 24 region titles and eight state championships. This year, senior Patrick King and junior Brightman Thomas led the boys’ team and seniors Kirby Cross and Courtney Williams led the girls’ team.
During the regular season the boys and girls most important victories included becoming City County Champions, a local meet of five or more teams, Ridgeferry Champions, a Northwest Georgia meet of 10 or more teams, and the Floyd Invitational Champions, a NWGA (Northwest Georgia) meet of 15 or more teams. This year both the boys and girls teams earned first place in the Regional Championship on Oct. 2, and on Nov. 9 the teams will compete in their last competition, the State Meet in Carrollton, Ga. The boys will run at 10 a.m. and the girls will run at 10:30 a.m.
During the regular season, in their division, AA, the girls were undefeated 25/0 and the boys were 26/6. The boys also finished the season, in divisions A-5A, 83/34 and the girls, 71/14.
Rob Davis ‘85 has coached the cross country team for over a decade and has trained many to reach goals and be successful. “His pre-practice and pre-races talks always spur cross country runners to race their hardest and to always finish strong,” senior Rachel Wiggins said.
Captains Thomas and King led seniors: Michael Byrd, Paul Kountz, Andrew Lawrence, Mark Mooring, Russell Evans, Roger Luo, juniors: Max Hinton, Benji White, Alex Gonzalez, and Nathan Sumner, and freshmen: Bennett Brock, Michael Davis, Nick Lewis, and Clark Coleman McGhee.
Girls’ captains seniors Cross and Williams were supported by seniors: Collins Davidson and Rachel Wiggins, juniors: Lydie White and Maren Hellwig, sophomores: Kristi Buice and Sarah Fox, and freshmen: Fatema Bandukwala and Schell Husfstetler.
