Cross Country: Girls 3rd, Boys 5th at Berry

The varsity cross country teams opened their seasons with high finishes at the Berry Invitational. The Berry Invitational is one of the largest cross country meets in the Southeast, with nearly 100 teams participating. Darlington ran in the Class A-AA-AAA race, the girls placing 3rd of 16 teams and the boys placing 5th of 20. These were the teams’ highest finishes at Berry in the last decade.
The girls were led by senior co-captain Ansley McDurmon’s 5th place finish. The girls also had two other top-20, award-winning finishers, senior co-captain Lindsay Evans in 13th and sophomore Bethany Cagle in 16th. The boys were led by senior co-captain Jesse Baker’s 6th place finish.
The conditions were tough for running, with temperatures in the 90s and large dust clouds being formed by the hundreds of runners. Despite the weather, the teams had two personal records (PR’s) at the meet. Freshman Kinslee Clevenger was selected to be Darlington’s “female runner of the meet,” with a PR of 22:24, finishing 25th. Freshman Spencer Fields was the “male runner of the meet,” with a PR of 19:07, finishing 48th.
The varsity cross country teams continue their season this Saturday, running on the State Championship course in Carrollton. The teams will then participate in the City-County Championship on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at Ridge Ferry Park in Rome.
