Cross Country: Girls 3rd, Boys 4th at Carrollton

The varsity cross country teams competed in the Carrollton Invitational on Saturday, which previewed the State Championship course. The girls placed 3rd of 17 teams and boys finished 4th of 19 in the Class A-AA-AAA races.
The boys were led by senior Jesse Baker’s 2nd place finish, with an all-time personal best time for the Carrollton course. Andrew Hudson followed, bettering his 2010 State 5K time by 45 seconds. Darlington’s “male runner of the meet” was freshman Chris Edwards. Chris ran a personal record (PR) by over a minute and was 3rd on Darlington’s team, placing 29th overall. Other members of the team running PR’s were Spencer Fields, Charlie Xu and Avery Cypress. Avery ran in his first high school cross country race and is recovering from a broken jaw.
The girls were led by senior Ansley McDurmon’s 5th place finish. She was followed by freshman Lauren Hooper in 12th, with a PR of 21:34. Callee Manna and Liz Darnell also ran PRs. Darlington’s “female runner of the meet” was sophomore Anna Cantrell. Anna ran a PR by exactly a minute and was 5th on Darlington’s team, placing 24th overall.
Boarding students Rebecca Schenk, Polly von Saldern and Helene de la Motte all competed in their first high school cross country race.
