Both the boys and girls varsity cross country teams won the City/County Championship in dominant fashion on Tuesday at Ridge Ferry Park. The boys won their third straight City/County title with a score of 28; Rome was runner-up with 47. In 2010 the girls finished one point behind Rome, 27 to 28. They worked hard to reverse that fortune and placed 6 runners in the top 9 of the race with a score of 25 to Rome’s 38.

The boys were led by senior Jesse Baker’s individual title with a personal record (PR) of 16:47. Jesse was named Darlington's “runner of the meet” for his victory. The top-5 scoring was completed by Cam Collins in 3rd, Andrew Hudson in 6th, Sean Healy in 8th and Alex Cox in 10th. Both Charlie Xu and Du Zhang ran PR’s in the JV race.

The girls were led by senior Ansley McDurmon in 3rd with a time of 20:23. Five other girls placed in the top 10: Lauren Hooper in 4th with a PR of 20:29, Bethany Cagle in 5th, Lindsay Evans in 6th, Anna Cantrell in 7th with a PR of 21:53 and Kinslee Clevenger in 9th. Freshman Lauren Hooper was named Darlington’s “runner of the meet” for her performance.

The JV race was dominated by Darlington runners, led by Remy Jennings in 2nd with a PR of 22:57. Also running PR’s were Shelby Martin, Polly von Saldern, Anne Marie McDurmon, Katie Hutchins, Helene de la Motte, Rebecca Schenk and Liz Darnell. Michelle Gendreau competed in her first high school cross country race.

The cross country teams will continue their season at the Darlington Cross Country Festival on September 24. The event will feature high school 5K races, middle school 2-mile races, an elementary 1-mile race and an open 5K.
