Crew to compete in Southeast Youth Championship Regatta

Crew members will be celebrating Mother’s Day weekend on the water as they compete in the 2007 Southeast Youth Championship Regatta May 12-13 in Clemson, S.C. Because fall races focus on endurance and spring races on sprint, athletes are being pushed harder than ever.
“The results this spring have been great,” said community coach Chip Stetson. “While we’re still building a team, results come in all sorts of ways – whether it’s commitment by each athlete, or pushing harder than we thought we could, or even upstaging a college crew team, it’s all been very positive. They all have great attitudes and are willing to work hard and try their best every day. A coach can’t ask for anything else.”
So far, the boys have competed twice – once against Berry College and once against St. Andrews Rowing Club in Roswell, Ga. Darlington’s four-man boat came out victorious over Berry a week before going head-to-head with two of St. Andrew’s novice 4 boats.
“Our guys rowed very well that day,” said Stetson. “The first piece we did resulted in a victory of more than one boat length of open water. Out boys were rowing 27 strokes per minute to St. Andrew’s 31. The next piece … I asked them to row 25 strokes per minute, and they did. St. Andrew’s was 31/32, and they finished just ahead of us. I was very proud of our group.”
The girls also competed against St. Andrew’s. While they came up short, the girls remain focused and continue to train hard for the Southeast Youth Championship Regatta’s 2,000-meter course.
“Our next event is a big one,” said Stetson. “If you can travel to Lake Hartwell to watch our boys and girls compete, that would be great. This is a great opportunity to watch our team compete against some of the best crews from the Southeast.”
