Crew rows into Darlington

For the first time in Darlington's history, crew, an Olympic sport, is being offered as an after-school activity. The coach, Dancho Pavlov, a two-time world champion in double sculls, will coach at Darlington and Berry College. “This first year will be to gauge the interest and speed at which students pick up the sport and art of sculling,” said David Hicks, Darlington president, explained. “Coach Pavlov may choose to enter into a few regattas this spring.”
Crew will begin after spring break. The activity will take place on the Etowah River next to the boathouse at Ridge Ferry Park, in Rome. Participants will meet five days a week from 3:45 until 5:30 p.m. using Berry College and Rome Rowing clubs' sculls during practice. “Crew is challenging but if you like it you will do it for your entire life,” Hicks said as he addressed curious students during a crew informative meeting. Hicks is a college level rower, and has rowed in many places all over the continent and the world.
