Creative Construction: 6th Grade Narnia Projects

We recently finished reading C.S. Lewis’ The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe in sixth-grade Humanities class. As part of our fantasy unit in Reading Workshop, we discussed various aspects of figurative language such as allegory and symbolism as well as plot structure and characterization. We also spent a good bit of time discussing the meaning of T.A. Barron’s statement, “Good fantasy has, underneath it all, an idea with weight.”

As a culminating project, students were charged with the task of creating one of six projects: an ABC book, a board game, a character’s diary, a diorama, a comic book, or a 3-Model. In addition to the creative portion, there was also a written element for each project choice.

The students blew me away with their creativity and attention to details from the novel. They spent time constructing amazing products that showed their deep understanding of the skills we’ve learned about fantasy as well as their comprehension of the novel.

Projects will be displayed in the library of Thatcher Hall through Tuesday, May 28.
