Cox Cub Pre-Firsters visit local farm

Decked out in Western wear, 13 of Janice Cox’s Cox Cub Pre-Firsters boarded the Darlington School bus to visit classmate Drake Frix’s family farm in Plainville, Ga., on Wednesday, May 19.
The students were treated to a pizza picnic and a tour of the farm. They saw wild turkeys, a mother Killdeer watching over her eggs and a herd of buffalo and fed pigmy goats, pot bellied pigs, chickens and even the fish in the lake.
“The children were amazed to see [the Killdeer] this bird, who had built her nest right at the edge of the yard, and how she watched over her eggs with such care,” said Cox. “They also loved it when Mr. Frix made a turkey yell and the male turkeys fanned their beautiful feathers in response.
“But I think their favorite was seeing the herd of buffalo,” she continued. “It was just so rare and different to ride in a wagon pulled by a huge tractor to get up close and personal with the enormous creatures. We learned that they are technically bison but are called buffalo in the United States.”
Mr. Frix taught the children about all of the farm animals and the care required for each. “We saw how very different each species was from the others and yet how they all had similar needs to survive,” said Cox. “It reminded us of how awesome and powerful God is to have created every unique creature, from the delicate Killdeer to the rugged buffalo, and what a great responsibility we all have to do our part to help preserve the animal kingdom.”
Visiting the Frix farm was a first for this pre-first class. “But since Drake’s little brother, Raine, will be in kindergarten next year, I’m sure it will not be the last,” said Cox.
