Concert Choir tours in two states

Darlington’s Concert Choir took their show on the road in April, performing at a variety of venues in Charlotte, N.C., and New York City.
In Charlotte, students performed at Trinity Episcopal Middle School and for alumni and friends at Myers Park Country Club. In New York, they performed at the Apollo Theater and the Jefferson Park Club House of the New York City Boy’s Club, both in Harlem; for alumni and friends at the Union League Club; and at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church. They also sang a selection at Ground Zero.
“Presenting concerts on tours like this allows our students to experience first hand all of the feelings associated with performing outside of their comfort zone, whether that comfort zone is the physical location or type of audience,” said Choral Director Dan Bishop. “They learn that each audience responds differently to their selections and that they need to make the necessary adjustments to better reach each listener. They also sense the need to make vocal adjustments to better utilize the acoustical environment in which they are performing. We always hear that practice makes perfect, but I can tell you that practicing without performing will get you no where in the musical discipline. They must go hand in hand.”
At each concert, the Concert Choir performed selections in a variety of genres, including Broadway, pop, gospel, spirituals and classical.
During the trip, students were also able to visit attractions such as the American Folk art Museum and the Nascar Museum, both in Charlotte, and New York’s Grant Central Station, Lincoln Center and Rockefeller Center.
“The tour, overall, was physically very demanding, but the choir rose to each occasion with their usual enthusiastic spirit,” said Bishop.
