Come and 'Get It!'

Within the last 24 hours, I have witnessed some of the most poignant examples of respect and kindness from our students, that I am absolutely compelled to relate them to you. 

First, yesterday in the car line for afternoon pick-up, the mother of one of our third-graders slowed to a gradual stop waiting for her turn to approach the crosswalk. While there, several of the boy’s friends asked the teacher on duty if they could go to the car and see his new baby brother. Now, these were typical rambunctious, energized boys, anxious to leave for whatever activity the afternoon held, so that instructor very tentatively agreed. As she escorted them to the car, they all peered in quietly, whispering to the big brown eyes that stared back at them. One of the most typical “boys will be boys” reached in and gently patted one of the tiny booties and softly said, “Hey there, buddy, how’re you doing today?” Shortly after, the gurgling baby and his mom were signaled to move to the area where the proud big brother was waiting. I will never forget that tender moment!  No one prompted the boys, no warnings were given about being quiet, no instructions about how to behave were said. These third-grade young men just knew. At that moment, another staff member looked at me through her moist eyes and commented, “That’s another reason I love this place—the children here just ‘get it’ !”

This morning as I was crossing the parking lot and about to climb the stairs into the Thornwood Building, I saw one of our fourth-grade patrol boys as he opened the car door for a younger student. He helped the child dislodge his book bag from the back seat and handed it to the little fellow with a smile. I could almost hear the words behind that kind look, “I know, I was small once too and always had a hard time lifting my book bag, especially in the morning!” Then right as I was imagining his thoughts, I did hear something. As this 9-year-old gentleman closed the door, he leaned in slightly and said to the dad, “Have a nice day!” As I wiped my eyes, I thought, here it is again—no one told him to do anything other than to open the doors in the morning car line. But here, before 8 a.m., he had already touched three people (whom I know of—probably more!) with his kind actions, smile and words! 

My position in admissions is to share with prospects the difference of Darlington and to encourage new students to become part of our family. My passion in admissions is to share the difference of Darlington and to encourage everyone to come, see and learn from our children who just “get it!”
