College Fair hosts 88 institutions

Darlington hosted its 14th annual College Fair Tuesday, Sept. 18, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the A.J. Huffman ’67 Memorial Athletic Center. This year’s fair boasted 88 colleges, the largest number the fair has ever hosted.
“The college fair gives students a chance to dream a little,” said Sam Moss (’63), dean of college guidance. “It gives them the chance to broaden their horizons and see a wide variety of schools that they might not get to see otherwise. For others, it is a chance to zero in on their choices.”
In addition to the many colleges in the Southeast, the fair hosted institutions ranging from Mt. Holyoke, Syracuse and Middlebury in the Northeast, to the College of Wooster, Washington University and DePauw in the Midwest, to Rice and T.C.U. in Texas, to the University of Colorado and the U.S. Air Force Academy in the West.
All students in grades 9-12 attended. “On a private visit, the student may have to miss class which can often be a struggle,” said Moss. “This gives them the chance to take some time and really give these schools a chance.”
Popular booths included the University of Alabama, Auburn, Emory, Furman, Georgia Tech, the University of Mississippi, Presbyterian College, Sewanee, Vanderbilt, the University of Virginia and Washington and Lee.
