Closing In on Our Goal

Some exciting developments have occurred in the Second Century Campaign this past week and we are closing in on $86 million. 

A donor who made an early commitment of $250,000 has agreed to an additional $250,000 and provided documentation to substantiate a $300,000 planned gift. 

On Wednesday of last week, Director of Planned Giving Clay Doss ('74) and I met with Mrs. Hilda Moore. Through a planned gift, she is establishing an endowed scholarship in memory of her sons, Reyn (’72) and Tom (’75). Tragically, both of her sons died at early ages; Reyn had an accident which left him paralyzed and Tom died of pneumonia in his early 30s. Her wish is to honor their lives with an endowed scholarship as both her boys told her many times that their Darlington experience was one of the most meaningful things in their lives. 

In addition, a class agent and member of our Alumni Council provided documentation of a $200,000 planned gift this week and a former trustee has established a $100,000 bequest.

These new gifts represent the largest we have received iin recent months. We are seeing an increase in the number of commitments in the $5,000 to $50,000 range as we continue to hear from donors responding to the mass appeal and as we visit with alumni and parents deeper into our prospect pool. 

We are also nearing the completion of the $500,000 challenge issued by Carla and Leonard Wood ($10,000 to go) for faculty support and the $500,000 Southeastern Mills Challenge for financial aid endowment (just $86,000 left). Many of our smaller gifts have been in response to these 1:1 challenges and a good number of these responders are first-time donors. We hope to have both of these fully committed by the September meeting of the Board of Trustees.
