Choral Opportunities for Middle and Upper School Students

Students interested in Darlington choral opportunities will have many chances to get involved this year.
According to Choral Director Dan Bishop, one new opportunity available at the Upper School is an ensemble for male voices, to be offered as an after school activity. This group will focus on pop and jazz.
“It is my hope to bring back the male chorus tradition that Darlington had for so many years before becoming a coed school,” Bishop said.
To encourage interest, a 10-voice male ensemble from Shorter College will perform during a Wednesday chapel service. The ensemble, which recently released its first compact disc, has been invited to perform at the Georgia Music Educator’s Convention and Spivey Hall in 2000.
As in previous years, the choral department will offer two choral classes during the school day.
The Concert Choir, which meets daily during sixth period, will hold auditions during registration and during the first week of school for students who have not yet auditioned. The choir will be representing the school at various events locally and regionally throughout the year, including the prestigious Northwest Georgia Choral Festival sponsored by Shorter College Monday, Nov. 1.
The second choral group, which meets daily during second period, is the Chorale. This choir, which will also present traditional concerts throughout the year, will represent Darlington at the Southern Star Music Festival sponsored by Six Flags Over Georgia. Last year’s Chorale was a girls choir. This year the choir will include boys.
“I hope we will have a large number of guys sign up for the Chorale this year. They need a place, just like the ladies, where their vocal skills can be strengthened before they audition for Concert Choir,” Bishop said.
At the Middle School level, the seventh- and eighth-grade choruses will continue to meet during their study hall period. This year, the choirs will be divided into a girls choir and a boys choir during the first trimester. Auditions will be held in the respective groups for a girls trio and a boys quartet which will further prepare them for the Upper School ensemble experience.
“I have been most pleased with the Middle School choruses these past few years. They have grown not only in size, but in musicality as well,” Bishop said. “I am looking forward to another prosperous year with these groups.” Sign-ups for the Middle School choruses will take place during the first few weeks of school.
To round out the musical experience for all ages, sixth-graders will again participate in singing and playing handbells during their one trimester of music exploratory class.
