Children Journey in Time at Possom Trot

Kindergarten and pre-first teacher Janice Cox led her students through a journey in time as they visited Possum Trot School on the Berry College campus, Wednesday, Oct. 19. After traveling down a dirt and gravel road in a hay-filled wagon, they gathered in the old Possum Trot church where they listened to stories of how Martha Berry began the first Sunday school classes for the mountain children. Along with the stories of the courageous and caring Martha Berry, the group listened to Bible stories, and sang “Jesus Loves Me” as their teacher played the old piano, just as the mountain children may have done 100 years ago.
They read Bible verses that were carved on the walls before the old church bell rang, then they marched to the old schoolrooms where they held their reading and math classes. The math and reading lessons were also lessons of nostalgia as they used slate boards, chalk sticks, and inkwells.
Their lunch also served as a means to experience the past as they gathered in the schoolyard on quilts to feast on chicken, biscuits, apples, and teacakes packed in tin buckets and enjoy lemonade in mason jars.
After lunch, they played old-fashioned games including Marbles, Hopscotch, and Hot Potato.
