Chicks, ducks, bees, goats, and a water buffalo: students support Heifer Project

Darlington Lower School students participated in a community service project with Upper School students: the Heifer Project. This charity donates live animals to families in third world countries, giving them a source of food or income, rather than the usual temporary relief. Students raised money to buy all kinds of animals ranging from bees to water buffalo. Lower school student Benjamin Womble and Winston Herring each raised $120 dollars for a goat, and the second grade donated $40 dollars for a flock of chicks and ducks.
Darlington’s involvement in the Heifer Project was suggested by Betsy Awsumb, Upper School faculty member, and coordinated by Zimmer House’s Mike Jones, junior. “I hope this can be an annual thing and that we can build on it and make it a real all-school Darlington project,” Awsumb said.
Heifer Project emphasizes proper care of the land through soil conservation and livestock management. Heifer’s main idea is that each person who receives a Heifer animal passes on the offspring of their donated animal to others, becoming a donor themselves. Heifer operates in countries all over the world, and was named one of the top 100 charities by Worth magazine.
