Center provides valuable lessons

First and second graders visited Lake Arrowhead Environmental Center in May where they gained knowledge in a museum, hiked, and fished. “This program helps children learn to appreciate nature and encourages them to take care of it,” Beth Starnes, first-grade teacher, explained.
Darlington has a long history with Lake Arrowhead. Several grades at the Lower School make trips to the center annually. Also, employees from the Center regularly bring animals to the classrooms allowing students close-up lessons about nature. First graders in Lucy Babcock’s class (as well as many other classes throughout the years) used recycling money to adopt animals then the funds provide maintenance and care for the animals. “When the children visit the center they are able to see first-hand all that their gifts provide,” Babcock said. “This is a great educational resource.”
