Casey spells path to top

Seventh grader Allen Casey earned first place in the written competition for the GISA State Spelling Bee on March 1. In the oral spelling bee in the afternoon, Casey came in seventh place. The competition was held at Stratford Academy in Macon.
Casey was selected to compete after winning the District Spelling Bee at St. Jude’s of the Apostle School, Sandy Springs, Ga., Feb. 15. Casey and Adam Al-Sayad, eighth grader, were selected to represent Darlington at this level of competition.
In order to qualify, the two students began by taking a written spelling test in their English classes in Round I of the Middle School’s spelling bee. The top 41 spellers went on to a second written test for Round II. The following 11 spellers competed in Round III on Jan. 29: sixth-grader Claire Davis; seventh-graders Allen Casey, Alicia Wright, Michelle Marie Picon, and Brittany Sloan; and eighth-graders Nick Lewis, Andrew Dodd, Adam Al-Sayed, Caroline Clark, James Withers, and Will Tucker. From Round III, Casey and Al-Sayad were selected to compete in the District Spelling Bee and Clark and Lewis were selected as runners-up.
