Career Day benefits students, volunteers

Why would professionals travel annually from near and far to the picturesque campus on Cave Spring Road? They gather on the campus each January to share their career experiences with students at Career Day, hosted by the Darlington Alumni Council. From acting to veterinary medicine and a great deal in between, in January 2002, 31 alumni, parents, and friends of the School assembled at the Upper School to give students a closer look at their professions.
“It is such a good way to tell the students that the benefits of a Darlington education translate to the real-world experience especially as it pertains to writing. I still use the skills I learned at Darlington as an attorney every day,” Rob Monroe’87, 2002 Career Day guest, said. “Participating in Career Day is a good chance to show students that the things they are learning now will have practical use in the future. It shows what diverse fields graduates go into.”
Career Day benefits students and the guest speakers. Alumni are able to share their wisdom with students while giving back to the School. Students get a chance to listen and talk with experts –obtaining a better understanding of their career interests.
The Alumni Council has scheduled Career Day 2003 for January 14. “We’re always looking for Career Day volunteers –parents, grandparents, and alumni to speak about their careers,” Michael Van Cise, gift officer for alumni giving, explained. “We want to give students the best possible experience so we would like to have a large list of volunteers from which to select.”
