Atlanta, bills, and the capitol were on the agenda for Reatha Carroll’s fourth grade students when they took a trip to the state capitol building in March. The trip was in conjunction with a Social Studies unit on the states in the southeast. “It was Georgia Day at the capitol and it was teeming with students and visitors from all over the state,” said Carroll. The tour introduced students to the inner workings of the capitol, and even took them into the House of Representatives. “The session had just been dismissed, so students were able to see many representatives still on the floor and to learn about the process of voting on a bill,” explained Carroll. Highlighting the trip was a photo opportunity with Governor Roy Barnes.
