The temperatures have risen, the halls of the School are empty and the parking lots look strangely deserted at 8:00 in the morning-Darlington rests in the summer to prepare for another school year next August. Think again! The summer can be perhaps the busiest time of year for the campus. Summer School begins on June 17 and Darlington’s wide offering of different camps begins even earlier. There are five camps offered by Darlington School this summer that engage, entertain and benefit kids from two to 14 years of age:
Basketball Camp stresses fundamental skills, with emphasis on shooting, dribbling, passing, rebounding, defending, and setting and using screens. The camp’s goals are to teach campers to work hard, encourage each other, improve their fundamentals, and enjoy competition. The camp is open to rising 5th through 9th graders. For boys the camp, directed by varsity boys coach Jim Van Es runs June 3-7 The girls camp, directed by varsity girls coach Angie Milford, runs July 22-26.
Camp Darlington supplies enormous fun and uses archery, canoeing, tag football, tennis, scavenger hunts, riflery, art and crafts, basketball, soccer, capture the flag, and Frisbee golf to generate good times. For rising sixth through eighth graders there is even a special adventure program of mountain biking, canoeing, hiking and rock climbing. The camp is directed by Darlington Lower School physical education teacher Doug Moon and open to boys and girls 8-13 years old. There are three two-week sessions: June 17- 28, July 1-12, and July 15-26.
Darlington School Cheerleading Clinic offers cheerleading instruction for first time cheerleaders and veterans alike. Learn age appropriate stunts and be a part of a pep rally-all under the direction of Darlington School varsity and junior varsity cheerleaders and supervised by the varsity cheerleading coach. The camp stretches from August 5-9 and is open to pre-kindergarteners through eighth-graders.
Delightascope fosters a love of learning, peer interaction, social skills, a sense of creativity, and motor development in its campers through an exciting array of art, stories, science, music, physical activity and computer technology. The program is directed by 12 year Darlington Lower School veteran Patricia Ayer. Boys and Girls ages 2-8 are welcome to join one of three sessions: July 8-12, July 15-19 or July 22-26.
Quarterback & Receivers Camp emphasizes the basic mechanics needed for success at the quaterback and receiver positions-two of the most physically and mentally challenging positions in football. The camp is directed by Darlington School varsity football head coach Tommy Atha and staffed by Darlington varsity coaches from other area high schools, along with current and former college players. The camp runs from June 10-14 and is open to rising 5th through 9th graders.
