Campaign Hits Milestone

Great progress continues in Darlington's historic Raising the Standard campaign. With an ambitious $37 million goal to reach by June 2000, total gifts and pledges to the Campaign for Darlington as of February 4, 1999, stand at $29.2 million.
A crucial step forward was made on January 1, 1999, when members of the Darlington family led the way to reaching $7 million in commitments to the new Student Athletic & Recreation Center. This has enabled Darlington to approach a major Atlanta foundation for its consideration of a challenge grant to help secure the remainder of the funds necessary to meet the Phase I goal of $10 million.
Including the complete renovation of the current Activities Building, the new Student Athletic & Recreation Center will transform Darlington's total athletic and fitness program.
"I can't tell you how much better Darlington School will be with this facility," said E. Wright Ledbetter '85, campaign director.
"It has been a dream for more than 15 years, since even my student days, and given the leadership that I have witnessed among certain alumni, parents, and friends to this point, I am convinced this long-awaited facility could soon be a reality for our students and coaches. We are so close, yet we cannot relax our efforts."
"I believe that the student athletic center will be the stepping stone for Darlington into the next century," Athletic Director Jerry Sharp said. "This new facility will set Darlington apart from all the other boarding schools we compete against, and will have a direct impact on every student and teacher at this school."
