Class of '67 Hopes to Name New Athletic Center
Three members of the class of 1967 have pooled their resources as well as their resolve to lead their class in naming the planned athletic center for their classmate, A. J. “Butch” Huffman ’67. Huffman died tragically in an automobile accident in 1971 after obtaining his degree from Georgia Tech.
Larry Williams, Wilkie Colyer, and Bill Holmes have raised over $3 million from their class thus far, in an effort to secure at least $4 million to name Darlington’s newest facility the A. J. Huffman Memorial Athletic Center.
“Those who knew Butch will never forget his special talents and qualities. He had the rare balance of academic, social, and athletic strengths,” said Williams, a Darlington trustee and athletic center team chairman. “He would have made a big difference in this world and in the lives of those who knew him if he had been given the chance.”
The athletic center team that has led Darlington’s fundraising efforts to build the facility the past four years is seeing outstanding results from its members’ efforts. Darlington learned in May that it was awarded a $1.5 million challenge grant from an anonymous friend of the school to inspire the commitments needed to fund the $16 million project. Including the challenge grant, total pledges committed to the athletic center exceed $12 million.
