Boys golf finishes with impressive wins

Darlington’s boys golf team split up on April 8 and managed to walk away with the team title at the Rome-Floyd County Championships, beating runner-up Rome High by 25 strokes at Stonebridge Golf Club. The team’s top six players played in the first round of the tournament on Wednesday, carding a team total of 7-over 151 to lead by 21 strokes after the first nine holes.
But four of the six players didn’t play on Thursday so that they could play in the Vidalia Invitational, a 60-team tournament. Junior Patrick McShane and senior Ben Burch were left to play with four junior varsity golfers against the other five teams in the field.
The team also won the Mannington Invitational at Field’s Ferry Golf Club in Calhoun on April 17, with a sizzling 303 that beat powerhouse teams like Dalton, Marist, Lovett, Calhoun, St. Pius, and Walker.
Senior David Hoyt was named to the all-tournament team after leading the Tigers with a 78-74-152.
The boys went on to win the Region championship on April 27 after a brutal rainout on the 26th. “David Hoyt, Patrick McShane, Drew Davis, Ben Burch, Elliot Harrison, and Sanders Wallis all did a great job,” Head Golf Coach Raymond Murray said.
“Collin Doss, Collin Niblett, Mark Dempsey, Brian Miller, Jackson Harris, Jeffrey Dodd, Nick Pluss, Allen Casey, Parrish Owens, and Drew Beaver have also contributed to a great 2004 season,” Murray said.
