Presley Leads Team to Fourth Place Finish, Wins Two State Titles
The Darlington boys track team took the fourth-place title at the state meet May 12-13 in Albany, Ga. Chris Presley had a banner day with a repeat state championship title in the 200m and 400m. Presley won a trophy for being the high point scorer of the entire state meet.
Other Tiger victories at state included a second-place win by the 400m relay team. This team, consisting of Presley, Adam Moy, Vann Knight, and Scott Foss, broke the school record with a time of 43.12.
The 1600m-relay team, Moy, Jonathan Glenn, Stephen Thomas, and Presley, came in third in the state. (Glenn ran in place of Ben Summerall, who suffered an injury the day before the state meet in spring football practice.) This foursome broke the school record during its qualifying heat May 12 with a time of 3:26.32.
Prior to state, several of the Tigers competed at the 6A region meet May 2 at Lovett. At region, Presley earned first place in the 200m and 400m, and anchored the first place 400m relay and 1600m relay. Presley, Moy, Knight, and Foss, won first in the 400m relay. Moy, Presley, Summerall, and Thomas won first place in the 1600m relay. Will Cunningham earned an impressive second place in the pole vault.
“This season was very successful,” said Coach Glenn Getchell. “The seniors have left a mark on the track and field program that will undoubtedly improve our work ethic in the future. We will miss them greatly.”
