Book topic comes to life

Not even pouring rain can thwart Reatha Carroll’s plans to show her students another view of the world. After reading “Pinballs,” by Betsy Byars, Carroll and her 36 fourth graders, visited the Berry College campus (in the pouring rain) to gain a better understanding of the book’s subject.
The story is about three children who go to live in foster care, covering how children adjust. Rather than simply discussing aspects of the book in the classroom, Carroll and her students visited Chick-fil-A founder Truett Cathy’s foster homes located on the Berry campus. They visited with the foster parents and toured the homes. The parents explained how children are chosen to come to the homes to live and showed students how the household is run.
The fourth graders returned to their classrooms with a better understanding of foster care along with pride for the community. “Many of the children exclaimed that it is awesome to see that our community has nice homes available for children in this situation,” Carroll said. “They also noted that these children seemed to live normal lives and were part of very loving families.”
