With literary choices of more than 3,000 titles and many students accumulating an exceptional number of reading points, the Lower School’s accelerated reading program is meeting its goal of encouraging children to read for pleasure.

Some students are self-motivated, while others need a little coaxing to realize the pleasures of reading. The latter are sometimes enticed through their stomachs. Students who earn 100 reading points by May are invited to lunch with Mark Tayloe at Gondolier’s Restaurant, Ann Glass, Lower School librarian, reports.

“Usually about 20 students per year reach or surpass 100 points,” Glass said. “This is a great way to encourage reading but it also serves as a tool to measure reading comprehension.”

The top-ten accelerated readers this year include: fifth-grader Dottie Vincent, who has a personal goal of 600 points and has earned more than 500 so far; fifth-graders Kevyn Bowling, over 360 points, Liz Pimper, over 300 points, Alicia Wright, 290 points, Sydney Ribot, 251 points, Caitlin Murray, 223 points, Alex Glass, 192 points, and Lee Taylor, 157 points; and fourth-graders Kennedy Wells, 172 points, and Laura Lynch, 156 points.
