Book Cover Art Contest winner announced

Senior Will Leekulcharoen was named winner of the McCallie-Kennedy Library’s Book Cover Art Contest for his watercolor design representing Pearl S. Buck’s “The Good Earth.” This contest will be an annual event to help students celebrate and remember the Upper School summer reading book.
"I was impressed by all of the entries, but Will Leekulcharoen's beautiful painting conveyed the culture and message of 'The Good Earth,'" said George Awsumb, one of several judges for the competition. "Combining strong composition, subtly mixed earth tones and originality, Will captured the essence of the novel."
As the winner, Leekulcharoen’s work will be displayed permanently in the library for years to come. Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, he also received a $100 cash prize.
“Honestly, I was sort of surprised to be the winner in this contest,” said Leekulcharoen, the son of Apisak and Pacharee Leekulcharoen of Pakkred, Thailand. “I entered because I wanted to get involved in something new and challenge myself. It was also an opportunity for me to express my artistic talent. I really liked the novel for its simplicity, purity, family orientation and its realistic scenes. This novel is not so far removed from localities in present-day China and, in fact, one of my Chinese friends still celebrates some events in the fashion described by the author.”
Second place and a cash award of $30 went to senior Kun Sun Lee, the daughter of Min Ju and Yong Jin Lee of Daejeon, Korea. Third place and a cash award of $20 went to sophomore Erin Wu, the daughter of Wei-Feng Wu and Shu-Fen Chien of Taoyuan, Taiwan.
