Bishop announces holiday concerts

The Christmas season is filled with traditions for families, and no less so for the Darlington family. The Annual Festival of Lessons and Carols begins the season’s celebrations on Sunday, Dec. 8, at 7 p.m. in the Morris Chapel. The service will feature the Concert Choir, Darlington Singers composed of auditioned singers from the fourth through sixth grades, and the Steel Drum Band.
The service is based on the Service of Lessons and Carols presented at Kings College in England and dates back to the early part of the 20th century. Kings College’s first Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols was held on Christmas Eve 1918. It was planned by Eric Milner-White, who at the age of thirty-four had just been appointed Dean of King’s after experience as an army chaplain which had convinced him that the Church of England needed more imaginative worship. Darlington’s Festival of Lessons and Carols is planned by Dan Bishop, chair of the Fine Arts Department.
The Traditions of Christmas will be held on Sunday, Dec. 15, at 4 p.m., also in Morris Chapel. The program will feature sacred and secular selections performed by the Concert Choir and Ensembles, Ladies’ Chorale, and the Middle School Chorus.
