Bevis makes choice

Darlington senior shortstop Kaycie Bevis was impressed with the credentials of the Young Harris softball coach Eric Geldart. And Geldart, in turn, was apparently impressed with Bevis' qualifications, too.
The mutual admiration resulted in Bevis signing a letter of intent Monday to play softball at Young Harris, a two-year school located in the mountains of north-central Georgia.
"Young Harris has a well-established program," said Bevis. "I know (Coach Geldart) has coached the Canadian Olympic team. So, that says a lot (about him and the Young Harris program)."
Bevis, a two-time member of the Rome News-Tribune All-Area team, caught the attention of Young Harris by producing a solid senior season with the Lady Tigers last fall. Often serving as the team's leadoff batter, Bevis batted .313 with a .403 slugging percentage and helped Darlington enjoy one of its most successful seasons in school history. Bevis led the team in batting average, hits and runs scored. She also solidified her reputation as one of the most sure-handed defensive players in the region.
For now, Bevis hasn't set any goals for her freshman season at Young Harris. But she does have some long-term plans. "I hope to transfer to a Division I or Division II school (eventually)," she said.
Bevis was attracted to the size of Young Harris. "I liked that it was small," she said. "It kind of reminded me of Darlington. It felt like home to me."
In addition to starring in softball, Bevis also played varsity basketball at Darlington.
