• The following students participated and won high ratings in the Foreign Language Speaking Competition sponsored by the Foreign Language Association of Georgia (FLAG) during their spring break: Ruth Kivastik, second-year Spanish, Superior; Peter Hicks, first-year French, Superior; Michelle Stadlin, third-year German, Superior; and Joyce Sweeney, third-year French, Excellent.
• Freshman Matt Ely was bestowed the Boy Scouts of America’s highest ranking, Eagle Scout, this spring during a ceremony at Rome’s First United Methodist Church.
• Kelli Gavant is the April Noon Optimist Student of the Month. This is an award given to acknowledge outstanding seniors throughout the year.
• Adam Richardson has been selected as the District STAR Student. Richardson chose Upper School Mark Alber, science department chairman, as his STAR teacher. The Student Achievement Recognition program was established by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators, the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, and the Georgia Department of Education in order to reward student excellence in scholastics and to allow students to acknowledge the teacher most inspiring to them.
• Sam Moss, Dean of Studies and College Guidance, has been asked to serve on the credentials committee of the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC). Moss’ two-year appointment begins January 2001. As a member of the committee some of his duties include determining the eligibility of delegates to the Assembly, making recommendations to the Executive Board regarding criteria for membership in NACAC, investigating membership eligibility, and appointing tellers for tabulating votes.
Sixth Head of House Named
Greg Griffeth, Upper School science teacher for four years, has been named head of house of north Trippeer. He and his wife, Susan, their son, Larsen, and dogs Jake and Daisy will live in the north end apartment of the girls dormitory. The dorm building will be split vertically with the main lobby providing access to both houses. Griffeth, an Albany, Ga., native, graduated from the University of Georgia in 1992 and will complete a master’s degree in biology at Vanderbilt University this summer. While at Darlington, Griffeth has taught Chemistry 1, AP Biology, and Environmental Science, and has coached track and J.V. football. He will continue to teach AP Biology next year.
