Tiger Pride and Grant Brings Learning Outdoors
The Lower School has been awarded a $750 grant by the Environmental Education Alliance of Georgia through the Outdoor Classroom Grants Program 2000. The Lower School Tiger Pride is supporting this venture by matching funds of $150. Lower School faculty members Beth Starnes and Beth Smith submitted the proposal to build a raised butterfly garden. This project, which will be located in the court yard area surrounded by the lower primary classrooms, is a cooperative effort of pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, pre-first, and first-grade students, teachers, and parents. The garden will be completed by May 19.
Fourth-Graders Adopt Friends
Becoming a noble tradition, fourth-grade students have adopted residents at Winthrop Retirement Center. Students made Valentine gift bags for their friends and plan to do the same for Easter. Also, they are planning to perform a portion of their spring musical at the center.
Student Art Adorns Walls
Twenty Lower School students had their artwork selected to be enlarged, framed, and hung on the Lower School cafeteria walls. At least two pieces from each grade were chosen.
“The display is permanent. And we’re hopeful this is just the beginning,” said Lower School art teacher, Katie Clotfelter. “Mark Tayloe and I want to have artwork all over the school. The kids feel honored. Thanks to the generosity of [Lower School parent] Mark Law, this project was financially feasible.” Law, a professional photographer and owner of Picture Perfect, donated half the cost of prints.
