Baseball Achieves First Round Playoff Victories

The Tigers swept Adairsville in the first round series of the Region 6-A playoffs Friday, April 16, bringing their record to 17-4.
The team won the best-of-three series by taking the first two games 5-1 and 5-0, with great pitching performances by Ellett Bates and Tyler Pearson. Vann Knight and Barrett Fleming led the Tigers offensively with two hits each in the opener. Justin Amos, Matt Watson, and Knight hit key singles in the second game, the Tigers’ first shut-out of the season.
The second round of the region playoffs against Calhoun, also a best-of-three series, began Thursday, April 22, too late for coverage in this issue.
Beginning the season with a win at the Adairsville tournament built much-needed confidence in the team, according to Head Coach Gus Bell. Victories over Galloway and Walker in the stretch were extremely important to the team as well.
“Our strong offensive players, Vann Knight, Jim Pardue, and Justin Amos, have contributed to the team’s strength, along with strong pitching performances by Pearson and Bates,” Bell said.
“When you win 15 games there are a number of players who contribute a lot. Some players do not make headlines everyday but their contributions are tremendous.
“With a great effort against Calhoun, hopefully we will continue our quest for the state playoffs,” Bell said. “Calhoun is ranked in the top five in the state but we will be ready for them.”
