Band garners first at Southeast Invitational

Darlington’s young instrumentalists spent Friday, April 13 competing in the Southeast Invitational at Atlanta’s Woodruff Arts Center.
The Wind Ensemble performed Faure’s “Agnus Dei” from “Requiem” and Erickson’s “Irish Folk Song Suite,” taking first place in the Division A Woodwind Ensemble category. The group was also named Overall Grand Champion in the A-AAA Concert Band/Wind Ensemble category, and junior Daniel Powell was recognized as Outstanding Soloist.
The Darlington Orchestra also competed, but for ratings only since the program is so new. Students performed Bach’s “Brandenburg Sinfonia” and Sammartini’s “Symphony in D Major.”
“Had I entered them for competition and not just ratings, they would have easily placed second,” said Will Camp, instrumental director. “The Darlington Orchestra received a rating of Excellent, the same as the first place group from Herndon, Va.”
Camp added that he is extremely proud of both groups for their hard work and dedication this year. The Upper School instrumental groups will perform May 13 at 4 p.m. in Morris Chapel. Admission is free.
