Baker wins John Pinson Outstanding Student Athlete Award

Senior Jesse Baker has been named a winner in the Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation Authority's John Pinson Outstanding Student Athlete Award Competition. This award, which recognizes two outstanding high school seniors in Rome and Floyd County with a $1,000 college scholarship, was presented at the Rome-Floyd Sports Hall of Fame at Induction Banquet on Feb. 27.
“Jesse has proven himself as an outstanding student-athlete and an exemplary student and role model both on and off the field,” said Athletic Director Bob Stinchcomb. “We are extremely proud of all of his accomplishments."
Baker has run track and cross country for seven years. This year, he took third at state in the 1600 and fifth in the 3200 after winning both at the region meet. He was also a part of the 4x400 team.
An AP Scholar With Distinction, Baker has taken 21 Honors and AP classes during the past four years and ranks first in his class academically. He is a member of the Cum Laude Society, National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society and has received E.L. Wright Awards for the highest course average in Spanish 3 Honors, Ancient World History Honors, English 1 Honors, Spanish 4 Honors, AP World History, Pre-Calculus Honors, Physics B, English 3 and Calculus AB. He also earned the Phi Beta Kappa Book Award, the Harvard Book Club Award, the John Rood Cunningham Award, the Everett E. Porter Award, and the Class Scholarship Award for the highest average in his grade for three consecutive years. Additionally, as a freshman Baker received the Daniel P. Hanks for highest overall average in the Upper School.
He is the son of Patty and Phil Baker of Rome.
Candidates for the John Pinson Outstanding Student Athlete Award must have received local, area, regional or state recognition in athletics and be active in school and community organizations and activities. They must also have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and submit an essay about what it means to be a student-athlete. Each candidate was scored on individual scholastic achievement, individual athletic achievement, school and community involvement, and essay.
