Athletic programs continue to grow

Participation in the Upper School athletic programs ran high last year with 183 boys and 158 girls involved, a total of 341 students out of a student body enrollment of 440, according to Athletic Director Jerry Sharp. “Our girls golf team topped off a number of outstanding accomplishments by many of our teams and individuals by winning its second straight state championship,” Sharp said.
“We will continue to host as many events as we can this school year,” he said. Some of the events that the School will be hosting are the Berry/Darlington Cross County meet, one of the largest cross country meets in the state; three volleyball tournaments; the state area volleyball tournament; a pre-season girls basketball tournament; a wrestling dual state championship tournament; the Darlington/Rome News-Tribune Tract Invitational; the girls state golf tournament; and numerous other region events.
Improvements to athletic fields continue as well. The new softball field is complete and in use. The practice football and baseball fields have new sprinkler systems and both fields were sprigged with grass.
This year, banners will be hung in the Van Es Arena of the Huffman Memorial Athletic Center to recognize the teams at Darlington that have won a state championship. Teams to be honored are baseball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, and track. Each banner gives the year and classification for which the championship was achieved through the Georgia High School Association.
