Athletes honored at Fall Sports Assembly

Outstanding athletes in football, cross-country, softball and volleyball were recognized at the Fall Sports Assembly Friday, Dec. 3, in Morris Chapel.
In varsity football:
Senior Sam Wilson of Destin, Fla., and junior Ryan McMahon of Savannah, Ga., received the Macon A. Brock Award, donated by Brock Jewelry Company to honor the most valuable offensive and defensive linemen on the team.
Senior Bert Collier of Rome received the Roger Hackett Award, given to the most valuable back on the team, and the Alumni Football Award, given by a Rome alumnus to the player who is chosen by his teammates as the most valuable member of the team.
Senior Zach Ware of Rome received the Newton Jewelers Award, given by Mr. Jim Newton to the most outstanding blocker on the team.
Senior Spencer Dismuke of Rome received the Ross Lynn Award, established by Mr. J.C. Rhea for the player who has meant the most to the team in spirit and conduct, even though he may not have won a letter.
Senior Michael Webster of Rome received the Billy Atkins Award, given by Bill Atkins (’50) to the senior player who has most exemplified the phrase “paying the price” for excellence in football at Darlington. Webster also received the Head Hunter Award, donated by Greg Hopkins (’69) and Keith Hopkins (’95) to honor the leading tackler on the team.
Senior Barton Lowrey of Rome received the Charlie Davidson Award, given to the most outstanding defensive back on the team.
Senior Matthew Stuenkel of Rome was selected by area football officials to receive the Golden Helmut Award for sportsmanship and cooperation on the field.
Junior Wil Tucker of Rome received the Darlington Boosters Club Scholastic Award, which is sponsored by the Darlington Boosters Club and given to the player with the highest academic average.
Webster and Collier also received Captain Awards.
In cross-country:
Senior Megan Betts of Rome and junior Bennett Brock of Rome received Most Valuable Runner Awards, sponsored by the Darlington Alumni Association.
Senior Kristi Buice of Rome and junior Clark Coleman McGehee of Rome received the Mrs. Jesse C. Atkins Cross-Country Spirit Award, presented to the team member(s) who have contributed the most in spirit and loyalty.
In girls’ softball:
Senior Haley Tallent of Rockmart, Ga., received the Most Valuable Player Award, sponsored by the Darlington Alumni Association.
Junior Megan Cordle of Rome received the Girls Softball Spirit Award, presented to the team member who has contributed the most in spirit and loyalty.
In girls’ volleyball:
Sophomore Alicia Wright of Rome received the Most Valuable Player Award, sponsored by the Darlington Alumni Association.
Senior Madison McRae of Macon, Ga., received the Girls Volleyball Spirit Award, presented to the team member who has contributed the most in spirit and loyalty.
Junior Maritza Mendoza of Houston, Texas, was noted for making an Outstanding Team Contribution.
Sophomore Hannah Tillman of Rome was named Most Improved Player.
Senior Natsuko Kiyoshi of Tokyo, Japan, received the Practice Award for Effort.
Sophomores Michelle Picon of Rome and Polly Roberts of Lindale, Ga., received the Coaches Award.
Kiyoshi, McRae and Mendoza also received Captain Awards.
