Asa Crawford: What RUMPUS Means to Me

No freshman can prepare him or herself for a weekend as shocking, uniting, and fun as RUMPUS weekend. RUMPUS changes people, and I can honestly say that each year it has meant more and more to me.
Stepping into the gym for the basketball game my freshman year, I was skeptical of what the weekend would hold. Going to school with the same group of kids since I was 5 had kept me from branching out to meet all of our dorm students in Summerbell House. I knew Jamie Spruill, who was in my advisee group, but most of the other students were as alien to me as they had been the day I started high school. That all changed with RUMPUS.
Whether I wanted to or not, spending the entire weekend in the dorm I got to know all of them and realized how blind I had been to not see what an amazing opportunity the dorm was for the day student. It provided a broader perspective for many day students who barely knew anything past the area between Chattanooga and Atlanta.
Without RUMPUS, I might have never stepped out of my comfort zone, but after only one RUMPUS, I knew that nothing would make me happier than to lead Summerbell House one day as Head Prefect, ensuring that more freshmen would allow RUMPUS to work its magic on them as well.
RUMPUS is much more than ridiculous costumes, chants, and the most fun weekend of any students high school experience. It is the single most important event at Darlington. The way it brings together the day and dorm students is the reason we have such a diverse yet close-knit community that I would challenge any school to match.
