Creativity and expression are alive and well at Darlington! Spring has sprung and we see a vibrant array of colors inside and out.
Outside, we see incredible pictures as we look all over campus and inside we find the art exhibits from our Lower, Middle and Upper divisions. The Upper School work is displayed in the Zelle Art Gallery and contains a collection of acrylic paintings done by Mrs. O'Mara's Art 1 classes. Our Middle School exhibit can be seen in the Ledbetter Commons in Thatcher Hall between the band and choral rooms. Check out this colorful exhibit using brush techniques and warm and cool color palettes. The fifth-graders created these pieces in Mrs. Burns' art class. For the Lower School, art work will be displayed for the month of April at Honeymoon Bakery. These pieces were completed by the third-graders and you will not want to miss seeing this special project from Mrs. Moore's students.
I am so excited about these beautiful pieces from our students. As I look at these works of art, my perspective is different than it may have been a few months ago. My lens is different because I was able to go on the AP Art History trip to New York recently. On this trip, we visited the MoMa, The Met, the Frick and the Guggenheim and saw many masterpieces. We also experienced the subway and culture of the city for the most part of five days along with seeing three musicals and eating some great food. Brian Inman did a great job planning the trip and allowed our students who went to truly experience art history! That's what it is all about. At Darlington, we want our students to experience and learn everything possible and in the arts we want that experience to get them excited about the creative possibilities that they can continue for the rest of their lives. Music and Art foster opportunities for a lifetime and we know that this has been true since the beginning of time. Art history is a chance to learn about history through the study of art and it offers an experience to expand our historical knowledge in amazing ways. If you have a senior who is ready for a challenging fine arts elective, consider the AP Art History class and also plan for your student to attend the trip in the fall of 2012 to New York. This trip is an incredible opportunity for your child to see, learn and experience the history of art.
Our students are inspired to create just like the famous artists in all of the museums. These artists received direction and created just like our students have done in all of the projects mentioned above. Each piece of artwork is a part of Darlington's art history and will hang in homes for years to come. I hope you will enjoy viewing these masterpieces in the next few weeks.
