AP Scores Remain Strong

86 Percent Earn 3 or Better; 20 Percent a Perfect 5
Darlington’s Advanced Placement (AP) exam results from May 1999, released in July, remain strong and consistent with those taken in recent years.
Eighty Darlington students took 127 AP exams in 21 subject areas, with 109 exams (86 percent) earning a 3 or higher, high enough for credit or placement in most U.S. colleges and universities.
Four subject areas achieved especially high scores. In George Awsumb’s Humanities class, 14 out of 14 students taking the AP Art History exam earned a score of 3 or higher. In Steve Killian’s AP Government and Politics class, seven of seven students taking the AP exam received 3 or higher. Eighteen of 19 students in David Powell’s AP English class earned 3 or higher on the AP English Literature and Composition exam. And 19 of 20 students in Craig Schmidt’s AP European History class earned scores of 3 or higher on the AP exam.
Twenty-six exams, 20 percent of the total taken, received a perfect 5, with one or more students achieving a perfect score on the following AP exams: U.S. History, Art History, Biology, English Literature and Composition, Computer Science, European History, French Language, French Literature, German Language, U.S. Government and Politics, Physics, Spanish Language, and Statistics.
“I continue to be pleased with the fine teaching by our faculty and the commendable performances of our AP students,” said Academic Dean Sally Rudert.
In addition to Awsumb, Killian, Powell, and Schmidt, Darlington faculty whose students took AP exams this year include: Kate Reed, Pat Waddell, and Mark Alber, science; Rick Buice, computer science; Carl Paxton, math; Randa Mixon, French; Tollie Ross, German; Carlos Ortega, Spanish; and Jeff Allen, Latin.
AP exams are graded on a five-point scale (5 is the highest grade given). Most colleges and universities in the U.S. award credit and/or placement for grades of 3 or higher. Darlington offers AP courses in 15 disciplines.
