Alumni Weekend: A Return to Traditions

Darlington School will host its annual Alumni Weekend, themed “A Return to Traditions,” Friday through Sunday, Oct. 15 through 17. The weekend will celebrate the reunions of class years ending in 4 and 9.
“You told us and we listened,” said Lauren Ledbetter, alumni officer. “After an overwhelming response from alumni saying they wanted Alumni Weekend moved back to the fall, the Alumni Council voted to do so. This year, we will have fall reunions, with a football game and a variety of activities on and around campus, which facilitated the theme ‘A Return to Traditions.’”
Friday’s activities will feature a Distinguished Alumnus Luncheon and a celebration honoring Distinguished Alumnus Elson Floyd (’74), as well as a homecoming football game and pre-game picnic at the Home-on-the-Hill. Entertainment will be provided by The Porch Pickers, featuring David Powell, chair of the English department, on vocals. (For more information on the band, click here.)
Saturday will begin bright and early with a Golden Tigers Breakfast, honoring alumni who have been out of school for 50 years or more, in the Yancey Suite of Darlington’s A.J. Huffman ’67 Memorial Athletic Center. Following breakfast, visitors can participate in a Fun Run, a tennis tournament, or an Alumni Golf Tournament at Barnsley Gardens.
“We feel fortunate that we are able to hold the golf tournament at Barnsley Gardens, as the resort provides a unique alternative to alumni golf tournaments of the past,” said Ledbetter. “This will be a great opportunity for our alumni to play Barnsley’s well-known course, ‘The General.’” Opened in 1999, “The General” was ranked No. 13 in the State of Georgia by Golf Digest.
After an Alumni/Faculty Lunch on the Morris Chapel lawn, there will be campus tours, individual class photos and a basketball game, hosted by Coaches Jim Van Es, Middle School principal, and David Rhodes, headmaster. The evening will kickoff with a cocktail party at Coosa Country Club, to be followed by individual class parties at various locations.
“Our class agents have been working diligently with their classmates to make their reunions a really great time,” said Ledbetter. “They want to get the word out to all of their classmates so that they can have record attendance, which makes the event more fun for everyone. We even have a few alumni who have already committed to coming back from as far away as Japan and Germany.”
The weekend’s activities will conclude Sunday with a Service of Remembrance in Morris Chapel and lunch at noon.
