Allen named SERID Outstanding Employer of the Year

Norris Allen, housekeeping, special events and security manager for Darlington School, was recognized as the Southeastern Regional Institute on Deafness’ Outstanding Employer of the Year this fall.
"Norris hired his first hearing impaired employee in 2000," said Wendell Barnes, chairman of the SERID Awards Committee. "He has since supervised as many as seven deaf employees at the same time in such varied positions as landscape maintenance, housekeeping and food service, and special events. He uses technology and sign language to communicate, recognizing early on that manual communication was going to be necessary."
Allen was nominated by Carolyn Grissom, who recently retired from the Georgia Department of Labor in Rome. He was also named one of three regional winners of the Spirit of Sodexo Award in the category of “Developing Our People” this fall and as the Rome-Floyd Disability Employment Committee’s Employer of the Year in 2006.
