All in the Family: Muschamp Darlington Tigers travel to New Orleans to support Muschamp’s LSU Tigers

The New Year started off with a chance of a lifetime for two Lower School students. Jordan and Robert Muschamp, and their parents, attended the Nokia Sugar Bowl at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans. The family had the opportunity to go to the game because their uncle, Will Muschamp ’90 is the defensive coordinator for the LSU Tigers.
The boys were appropriately impressed with their uncle’s coaching. “I think he is a really good coach because his defense is so good,” Jordan said. “I want him to coach me in football.”
Will’s former Darlington football coach, Jerry Sharp, seconds Jordan’s review of his uncle’s coaching. “Will was a very intense high school football player. He was like having a coach on the field,” Sharp, who now is Darlington’s athletic director, said.
Years later, when Muschamp was coaching defensive ends and linebackers at Jacksonville State University, Sharp invited him back to his alma mater to talk to Darlington coaches. “I knew then that there were great things in store for Will as a coach,” Sharp said. “He was so knowledgeable about football that I practically glowed with pride.”
Jordan’s brother, Robert, has his own review of the game they attended. “His defense sacked the quarterback five time,” he said. Jordan and Robert made signs for the game, hoping to be on national television. Jordan’s sign said, “Uncle Will’s D Rocks,” while Robert’s said, “Muschamp’s defense will protect this house.”
The boys reported that they enjoyed the many sights and sounds of New Orleans. “Our hotel was great and their so many people there,” Jordan said. Robert liked buying a tiger head and getting his face painted like a real tiger. They both enjoyed seeing all the players and Uncle Will after the game.
But by far, the best parts of the trip for the entire Muschamp family were watching LSU defeat Oklahoma 21-14 and win the National Championship.
