A Parent’s Role in a Student’s Digital Citizenship

As parents, we sometimes stress about our children’s online presence and how we can protect them. Since email and texting have become our No. 1 means of communication, we have to educate ourselves first to ensure we know what to do to keep our families safe. 

On Thursday, Nov. 10, at 7 p.m., the I.T. Office we will host a seminar on digital citizenship for Darlington parents in the Upper School's Dodd Banquet Room. We will cover many aspects of a student’s online presence and how parents can educate themselves on new technology. 

Here are some of the points we will discuss:

Setting limits – How much time should your student spend online? Should technology be located in the bedroom at all times?

Internet safety/Private information – How to keep them safe online? What should or should not be shared online?

Familiarizing yourself with the technology your students are using.

Social networking – Learn about Facebook, Twitter and how to set permissions and privacy settings regarding who can see your student site. Know who they are "friending."

Digital footprints – Learn what this is and how it can effect your student's college and career.

Cell phones/Sexting –  Learn what "sexting" is and how you can prevent it.

App safety – What to look for in applications on iPads, iPhones and iPods.

Cyberbullying – Behavior of "cyberbullies" and signs to look out for.
