A Great Year in Fine Arts at Darlington

What a great year in fine arts at Darlington! We are coming to the end of a year of concerts and presentations from our choral, theater, instrumental and visual arts programs at all three divisions. Congratulations to all the students and faculty who work so hard to make all of these programs successful!
Battle of the Bands was a real treat this week at the Lower School as students played many styles of music and had the opportunity to showcase creative expression at its best. Last week, we heard from Upper School Instrumental Music Conservatory students and our senior vocalists, and we also saw some great artwork produced by members of our senior class. Earlier in this month, the Middle and Upper School choirs performed a great concert on Mother’s Day. The spring instrumental concert featuring both Middle and Upper divisions was also a huge success.
Programs representing all divisions in theater, choral and instrumental music, and visual arts have occurred all year long, and we have been moved by the commitment from our students as they strive to develop and pursue excellence in the arts. Each fine arts experience gives our children the chance to improve self-motivation, confidence and concentration while providing development both socially and emotionally. Students who participate in the arts expand their individual growth in creative expression and opportunities for teamwork.
Darlington students have the opportunity to become incredibly well-rounded through all of the many activities that are available in academics, arts, athletics and service. The term "well-rounded" is defined as being fully developed and well-balanced. We are developing students who will contribute to our society for many years to come and it is because of the many experiences that they are having at Darlington in the fine arts and the plethora of other programs we provide.
Yes, fine arts classes many times take up a Study Hall period at the Upper School and require extra time and effort at all three divisions, but it is a fantastic stress reliever and provides a tremendous sense of worth. The fine arts develop a self-discipline that translates into success in other academic areas. When we think about what we want to give our students, isn’t that what it’s all about? Let’s encourage our students to continue to create and grow in the many forms of expression in the arts that we offer at Darlington.
