As we look toward the end of the school year with great anticipation and perhaps some apprehension, the Teaching and Learning Center would like to share a few test-preparation strategies to help you get through finals.

1. Have a positive attitude! Approach a big test as you would approach a giant jigsaw puzzle. It might be tough, but you can do it!

2.  Make a study plan. During the days before the test, create a schedule. Study a little each night. Do not wait until the last minute and “cram.” Your brain learns best a little at a time.

3. Study effectively. Listen to your teachers’ suggestions about how to prepare for the final exam. Complete all study guides. Review your notes and previous tests. Study your flash cards.

4. Prepare yourself. Get a good night’s rest the night before your exam. Wake up in time to eat a good breakfast. Arrive to class on time and prepared.

5. Use good test-taking strategies. Quickly write any difficult to remember information across the top of your paper before starting your test. Answer the easy questions first. On multiple-choice questions, eliminate any obviously wrong answers. Before answering essay questions, jot down and organize your ideas. Do not change your answers unless you are positive they are wrong.

When it comes to exams, combining a few good testing-taking strategies with the hard work you have invested all year is a perfect recipe for success!
