5 Reasons Why I Have the Best Job in the World

If you had the opportunity to see Darlington's production of "The Sound of Music" this past weekend, I am willing to bet that you were blown away. I took my grandmother-in-law to the Sunday matinee, and she truly could not believe all the talent that was on stage -- from the nuns who sang in perfect pitch and harmony, to the instrumentalists who played the score flawlessly, to the absolutely perfect casting of "Maria" and the "Captain," to the incredible sets, to the vocal power of "Mother Abbess," to the performance of the precious, little third-grade actresses. It was all phenomenal! (And I really could go on and on.)
As I sat at home last night, reflecting on this brilliant performance of one of my all-time favorite stories, I began to think about all the things we are doing right. And I was proud. I'm not a graduate of Darlington. I don't have children in school here. But after 10 years as a staff member, I bleed as purple as anyone. I am fortunate to be part of this special place and I truly believe I have the best job in the world.
Here are five reasons why:
1. The Darlington Community is filled with some of the most interesting people I have ever met, and their stories are incredible. It is my job to tell them, and what could be more fun than that? I only wish there were more hours in the day, more days in the week, more weeks in the month... you get it. There is NEVER a lack of interesting and inspirational stories to tell.
2. Along with #1, I get to brag on really awesome kids when they do really awesome things! Darlington has the best students in the world and I will never get tired of hearing that a senior is a finalist in a highly competitive college scholarship program, or that an athletic team has swept the region, or that a student won the geography bee, or that the Early Learning Academy is putting on a class play. Every single one of these things is special and deserves recognition of some sort, and it's my job to make sure that happens.
3. I get to write all day every day. Now this may sound like punishment to some people, but for a girl who has loved to write ever since she can remember, it's a dream come true. These days, it's not always easy to find a job doing something you truly enjoy. (And it helps that the subject matter is usually pretty cool -- see #1 and #2!)
4. I get to work with wonderful people. The faculty and staff at Darlington are absolutely incredible. They go above and beyond to make sure that the Darlington experience is special for our students. They are always coming up with new ideas, programs and techniques that will make Darlington School even better than it already is. It's so much fun to work with people who inspire you on a daily basis!
5. Have you seen this campus?! Who would not want to work somewhere this beautiful? My office is located in Wilcox Hall (stop by and visit anytime!) and when I step out the front door, I get to see an amazing view of Silver Lake. It is a view that is and will remain etched in the minds of students and alumni for years to come -- one that evokes so many fond memories of the friends, teachers and experiences that transformed lives. I am one lucky lady to see this each and every day. (Sidenote: My husband and I got married on the Darlington campus in 2012, so my view of Silver Lake and Morris Chapel will forever evoke my own special memories.)
There are a lot of other reasons I enjoy my job, including the fun multimedia projects my office gets to be part of and the innovative marketing strategies we help guide, but that's for another blog. For now, think about your story and perspective -- your unique connection to Darlington -- and some of the things that make your personal experience with this place so special.
