3,500 Run in Berry-Darlington Invitational

The cross country season began Saturday, Sept. 11, with the Berry-Darlington Invitational on the Berry College campus in Rome. The annual event, the largest cross country meet in the state, was the first of several opportunities for teams to qualify for the state competition on Saturday, Nov. 6, at Carrolton.
The event, directed by Darlington head coach Rob Davis, took place under sunny skies and with the support of large crowds from the Darlington community. There were more than 3,500 runners from over 100 Georgia and several Tennessee schools competing in eight different races.
The Darlington boys boys finished 18th of 28 teams in the combined A/AA competition, while the girls earned a third place trophy by defeating all competitors except AA Westminster and Chamblee County.
Junior veterans Eli Montgomery and Stephen Smith led the boys with times of 18:15 and 18:26. The strong showing by the veteran girls team was led by senior Ana Monroe Fitzner (20:34) and junior Lindsay Harbin (20:37). With their efforts, Darlington placed five in the top 22 runners.
