Tigers break out big plays in rout of Coosa
By Staff Reports - Rome News-Tribune
Nate Kunczewski accounted for almost 200 yards of total offense and four touchdowns, and teammate Matias Selle scored two touchdowns on runs that covered more than half of the Chris Hunter Stadium field Friday. The Darlington Tigers bounced back from a blowout loss at the hands of Heard County High the weekend before to bounce the Coosa High Eagles back home on the wrong end of a 49-13 decision in Region 6-2A action.
Of the three passes Kunczewski completed Friday, two were for touchdowns of 50 yards or more. In all, he had 113 yards through the air to go with 80 on the ground in seven carries. Both Kunczewski and Selle had two touchdown runs, and Bo Powers also scored on the ground for the home Eagles.
Coosa’s Brayden Aikins completed seven passes for 102 yards while C.J. White rushed 19 times for 139 yards.
Selle notched the game’s first touchdown on a 51-yard burst, and he put through his own PAT kick for the early 7-0 Darlington lead.
The game would then see a trade of interceptions, Gabe Thacker for Coosa and Trey Moore for the Eagles. Moore’s pick came on the 12-yard-line of Darlington, and Selle would score his second touchdown from there.
On Darlington’s next series, Kunczewski capped off a 58-yard drive with a 5-yard scoring run. The first quarter ended with a 21-0 Tiger advantage.
The home team stacked on three more touchdown drives in the second quarter before Coosa could end the shutout bid. Levi Duggan had a 50-yard touchdown catch; Kunczewski, on a drive starting on his own 17, ran 65 yards for his second touchdown; and Bo Powers went 50 yards to the end zone. That was five of the six touchdowns by 50 yards or more.
The Eagles, down 42-0, scored after flipping the field with a run from scrimmage to the Tiger 28. The halftime score was 42-7.
In the third quarter, Moore was on the receiving end of a 54-yard touchdown connection with Kunczewski. Maddox McNab had taken over PAT kicking duties and kept Darlington perfect in that stat.
Maddox Hammons caught a 41-yard touchdown pass from Akins in the fourth quarter.
Both teams entered the game with similar records overall (3-3) and in 6-2A (1-2). Darlington now sits alone in fifth place in the region at 2-2, 4-3 overall, one game ahead of the Eagles.
