Senior Ventures Spotlight: Clara Graham

For my Senior Ventures project, I am working with and helping special needs children. Last February through May, I helped with a special needs dance class and fell in love with it, and I quickly found out it was something I was passionate about. Since these dance students only have the opportunity to participate in the classes part of the year, my goal is to develop a year-long program to support their passion for dance.

My plan is to provide classes after school or on the weekends in Darlington's Huffman Athletic Center. I will begin with instructing a few girls and get nondancers or dancers to help for service hours in return. We will play dance games and choreograph a dance that we could perform for their parents or the school.

My Darlington School mentor is Mrs. Atkins, and my community mentor is my dance teacher, Meredith Thomas. Ms. Thomas leads the class in February through May. I am looking forward to working with the dance students again this year and I am thankful for the opportunity to persue this through the Senior Ventures program.

Senior Ventures is a year-long academic program built on a framework of leadership, innovation and community engagement. Through a proven self-guided exploratory process, seniors whose proposals are selected for this program work independently to develop a project that’s interdisciplinary in scope and is connective, performance-based, investigative, or entrepreneurial. Click here to learn more.
